I use a Hummingbird 525 depth finder for two reasons. It's easy to learn to operate and view and it costs less than 150.00. I use mine basically to follow the bottom contour of the lake/river and in the Fish ID mode it will beep when a fish passes under my boat.

With fishfinders you do get what you pay for. But $100-200 gets you today what $600 did 10 years ago. I have used the humming bird Piranah Max 215 or Eagle Fish Easy 245 are good for a cheap unit, are available in portable or fixed, and can be run of AA batteries, or marine batteries. Both offer surface temperature readings, and dual sonar with about 15 ft of coverage on the bottom of the lake. A good option for a casual fisherman.

Here is a basic Eagle that is has a large 5" diagonal, high resolution, 320 x 320 pixel LCD with 16-level gray scale & is only $150. http://www.threeriversmarine.net/catalog…
Here is Three Rivers Marines web page http://www.threeriversmarine.net/page/pa…
Great company to do business with and also have a toll free phone number you can call and ask questions.
They also have the cheapest prices I have been able to find anywhere.........why I do business with them.
They Carry Garmin, Lowrance, Eagle, & Hummingbird as well as others you would not be interested in....besides being expensive (which some of the above are also) other brands they carry or more for the Ocean.
Do some research and contact me if you want......I have way to many years experience fishing and used to fish Tournaments.
I own two boats one has Eagle electronics on it ( Tracker 165) my other rig is a Triton 19X that has Lowrance electronics on it.
Good Luck and smart of you to start looking now.
