How To Read My Fish Finder?

i am new to the whole fish finder game and i think that i know what i am looking at on the screen, but i am not 100% sure. i mounted the sensor on the back of the boat. when the finder alarms and shows fish on the monitor, does it mean that the fish are directly behind the boat or does the sensor scan around the boat or just what the sensor is pointed at. another question is when i am anchored down and the boat isn’t moving, the screen on the monitor looks as if i am still moving. the bottom of the river that i am in looks on the screen as if it is moving. it just seems to me that when i stop that the monitor would stop too. i have a himmingbird 215 if that matters any. like i said, i am new to the fish finder game and if someone could help me out with that i would be greatful and it will help out my fishing game. i was in the river yesterday and the monitor was just going crazy with fish that was near by. i was just having a problem finding them not knowing what i am lookingat

the screen will continue to move even when you are stopped. If you watch you will notice the bottom line will stay the same but the screen will change to show you any thing that changes between the transducer and the bottom. Anything that swims by or floats by suspended will or should show up as a blip. It doesn’t have to be a fish just anything that will reflect a signal. Fish are commonly shown as groups of blips rather than just a single one. The fish are with in the angle of the transducers signal and not maybe right under you. If the degree of signal of the transducer is say 60 degrees and you are in 50′ of water they are less likely to be closer to the boat than if you where in 15′. If your transducer is directional they are in that direction. They usually are just a cone shape as standard and could be said that they are right in your area but not right under your stern but could be slightly to the side or front. I hope this helps.
