Fly Fishing: A Question About Using More Than One Fly On Your Leader?

I have only ever fished with a single fly on my leader, however when using more than one fly on your leader, are the flies attached a various points in a straight line on the leader, or do you attach more leader to the main leader using dropper loops? I’m guessing that in the case of nymphs, it would make more sense to me to have the heaviest fly on the tip of the leader perhaps.
