How Can I Make My Fishfinder Into A Portable One.?

Ive heard people making their stationary fish finders into portable ones by mounting the transducer onto a stick then attaching it to some kind of 12v battery. I have mounting part figured out but what kind of battery should i use? Please be specific, name, brand, where to buy, etc..
